I don't think we should have a one size fits all kind of approach. Personal feelings about your own driving are one thing. If you want to throw in the towel, you should throw in the towel.
Some are in urban environments and some rural. Big difference between San Francisco and Arcata. Maybe Google will have automated cars to save us from the sentence of banishment that occurs when your drivers license is taken from you.
I am thinking of a horse and or buggy.

There was a fairly interesting article in the New York Times auto section a few weeks ago talking about aging motorcyclists. It seems as motorcyclists approach late middle age they consider trading their two wheel bikes for three wheel bikes. Harley Davidson is, according to the article, doing a lot of business selling middle aged people three wheeled motorcycles. Of course I would imagine most people in their late 70s and 80s give up three wheeled motorcycles too.
