Default Should I Be

PANAROID ??
OK , because of huricane IVAN I've had to put off getting an S2k, no garage at the moment. So I've been reading about several people having transmission failures including a few MY04's. and I'm beganning to wonder if it's a common thing with the S2k's or is it "operator malfunctions"

I've not heard of this as a problem. I've got 14,000 miles with no transmission problems.

You might want to take some of the failure reports that you read in these forums with a bit of a grain of salt. Some of the failures are through abuse; some cars are on their second, third or fourth owners and have been driven very hard by all;
some cars are being tracked (raced) and some are valid. The trick is finding out which is which. When in doubt try and look for TSB's.

I did a search on this. It appears to be no more orevalent that other years, and the change to CF synchros is supposed to have resolved some of the earlier MY issues.
I have very no issues with mine.

I'm with Anarky on this one. The S is probably one of the most well built and reliable roadsters ever mass produced. Also, you're bound to see problems with various aspects of the car posted on this forum. Very few of us like to see ourselves type so much that we would spend the time required to continually post about how well our cars are running.

Wayne buddy, no, you should not be paranoid. I have over 54,000 miles on my S2000 that I bought in March of 2001 and it still purrs. As a matter of fact I may be picking up another one this weekend! It's a Honda afterall, and I'm getting my 6th soon, I have such trust and faith in them.

The reports would not keep me from getting one, but the lack of a garage might. I would not have bought mine if I had not had a garage space for it. For keeping it out of the weather, but most of all keeping it secure. Theft (of the seats) and other stuff seems to be on the rise, and FL I believe is one of the states where it is happening quite a bit. Also vandalism. Just my opinion...

The early cars (first two years) had some reports of problems with the syncros. Especially weak is second gear. I'm told, but do not know, that the 02s had some modification to the second gear synchro. That said, some owners of 02s still had a grind or crunch going into second gear. In 04 the tranny was revised and that is a well documented change. I have heard some reports of continued problems, despite the changes.

Lets talk about the problems. Some have faced problems so severe that a rebuild or replacement was needed. Rick of Ricks Accessories is one such owner, but there are many lesser known members who have posted similar problems in Under the Hood.

For a large number of owners, the shifting problem was addressed by changing the tranny fluid AND the clutch hydraulic fluid AND adjusting the clutch cable. I did this and now my tranny is fine.

That and having a second (now third) vehicle pushed me over the edge.
