Thanks Patty, I figured any shelter dog would be at least $250. I just made a list of what I like. I may have to add Spaniel mix to it.

Dog Requirements (don't laugh)
Looks - good looks are important
Gender - must be female
Weight - 40 pounds would be ideal
Noise level - we both hate small yappy dogs
Kid friendly - must be friendly & loving
Activity level - prefer low to moderate
Grooming level - prefer low to moderate
Price range - prefer $1k or less but will go higher
Age - puppy
Training - prefer a breed that house trains easily
Play area - we have an acre of underground fencing
Birds - need a bird lover, not a chaser
Bloodline - not important – pure, mix, or mute ok
Breed - the million-dollar question?
Breeds we’ve had - Golden retrievers (3), Boarder Collie, Maltese
Breeds of interest - Boston Terrier (selected by AKC test plus my granny had them), mini Bernedoodle, miniature American Shepherd

hyper & bark but neat dog . . . but thanks for the suggestion . . . I am open to considering anything (within my budget). The miniature American Shepherd I just called on was a mere $1,800. Shouldn't they come with a life time warranty for that price?

Hmm I don't recall hers being big barkers or too hyper, maybe she got lucky. I think the goldens she had were more hyper.

She now has the cutest mixed breed dog. Face of a golden, but a small squat body. She's a barker though...

Good luck with the search. Did you buy Donna new diamonds or a new horse and that's why she's agreed to a dog?

Patty (and anyone else interested) if you are considering another Shepherd, my sister has been raising them for 40+ years. Both of mine came from her. She has partners in No Cal and Oregon to get different blood in their lines, but they are beautiful dogs with great dispositions. They are also large dogs, and do not have the sloped back of imports (which I don't like and does not look natural). They are also family dogs and do great with children. If anyone is interested, PM me and I'll sent you a link to her website.

Dave that post has the look and feel of some of the breeders from southeaast PA and northern MD.
I don't have direct experience with them but check the names of the breeders. please.
We were looking at black labs and ready to pull the trigger when i looked at reviews

Jerry I agree. That was from a site called Greenfield Puppies. It's my guess it is a site which is almost 100% Amish listings. I see the site has 21 complaints with the BBB where the seller misrepresented the dog's condition. In any case I would do a search on any breeder I was considering. As for one I missed out on, that breeder was primarily a wholesale dealer in farm products like pumpkins.

Believe them. My Kyras, Whiskey, Vector and Rogue were all from German Shepherd breeders, but before Facebook or the internet had reviews. I think you can always delete the highest and lowest and kind of stick with the middle ratings. I'm sure you already know this but I stick with the general overall picture for anything I'm looking at reviews of.
