I grew up hearing "shut up" quite often from my father. I remember saying it once to my son when he was 8. His response was "That's not nice. You shouldn't tell people to 'shut up'." My response to him was "It's not nice to continue talking when I've asked you 3 times to be quiet, please. If you respect me, I'll respect you." I never had to resort to that measure again.
