Thumbs up Signatures

I thought I'd post this here first as a way to gauge opinion based on a group of relatively thoughtful S2Ki users -- I just know what reactions on some of the other boards will be.

On the forum for my other car, they've decided to restrict personal signatures to 50 characters of text (not counting hidden characters in hyperlinks) and disallow pictures. This was related to the excesses of a few individuals and the accumulation from everyone of data that had to be handled by their servers.

Given that we have server issues here, anything to speed them up would seem to be worth considering. And I don't really like to go around handing out unsolicited aesthetic judgements, but some signatures on S2Ki are clearly tacky and others are borderline offensive. I, for one, know all sorts of places where I can find videos of jiggling mammaries and so don't have to be slapped in the face unexpectedly with them.

I expect that here on S2Ki it would be important to let people continue to display their badges, but what about text-only signatures with badges as a way to speed things up? HPH

Some of the sigs here are outrageous. If you travel to "other" areas here you'll see them often. Some of the largest pictures and animations belong to guests.
BTW, your owl is blinking!

I agree, once you leave "Vintage", you never know what you're going to run into. Between the animated tops pulling up and the pants pulling down, it's getting a little out of hand. Good post HPH!

This is an issue that has been addressed in the past. Usually when the admins try to impose restraint, it ends us starting a fight. When they have succeeded the success was only temporary until the the sigs started to grow again. It is a very difficult issue to deal with, but I was under the impression that only members could have pictures in their sigs. If you look in the other forums I think you'll find that the most offensive sigs (and some of the biggest sigs) belong to members.

For the most part the sigs in Vintage are at least tasteful. As for the others, I suppose the best approach is simply to live and let live. Nothing else seems to work.

Size of sigs (not necessarily content) has certainly been an ongoing issue with the Admins, but I don't know how much it is being enforced these days. I think it is being largely left up to COs/Mods to monitor and recommend action. I find some avatars to be offensive, too!!

I can't stand some of the photos in sigs. I too am offended by some.

Ah, I see. I'm new enough that I wasn't aware of that (or else my increasingly lousy short-term memory is the culprit...).

It is true that rules require enforcement to be credible, which implies that COs and mods get turned into "signature Nazis" (in this case), and that isn't what many signed up for, I expect.

I'm pretty good at self-indulgent, holier-than-thou narcissism, wherein I congratulate myself for being more grown up than those yo-yos with the huge and outrageous personal statements on their posts (whether avatar or signature), but that doesn't solve the problem.

But maybe, aside from server issues, there really isn't a problem that can't simply be ignored. Still, it's obnoxious and it makes me want to disassociate myself with them, and, by extension, S2Ki in general. HPH

I agree, which is why I rarely visit the other forums (aside from the atrocious spelling and grammar, not to mention the ubiquitous "my dad can beat up your dad" p*ssing matches). Some of the other boards that I visit have software that offers the option of ignoring signatures and attachments. It doesn't seem to be an option here, though.
