Which "DC Suburbs?" I was under the impression speed cameras were not legal in Virginia and only limited numbers of red light cameras were allowed.

A couple of years ago in Cleveland my wife received a photo of her car in the mail. It was in the middle of an intersection and I guess the light was red. Ohio requires these intersections to have visible warning signs.

$40 ?? I think our minimum speeding ticket price in MN is now $169. All the online fee schedules show a bit less but I think by the time you pay the fine + costs they tack on it is $169, or at least it was the last time I got one for 11 mph over which has been a while.

Got pulled over once doing 85 in a 55 when I was in college. College was in a small town of about 25,000 people with almost half being students, so the officer saw my student parking tag and decided to give me a warning since I was on the way to class :P But the closer call was also in college when a cop pulled me over about 3 blocks from my apartment for speeding on a back street. I had just left my friends house a couple of miles away and it was 1am. I pull over into a parking spot and get out and it went something like:
Officer: You were speeding a little back there. How much have you had to drink (he could smell beer on my breath)
Me: I have had a few beers, yes
Officer: Looking at where my car was parked. "So, where do you live?"
Me: "About three blocks that way"
Officer: "Where are you thinkin of leaving this car tonight?"
Me: "Right here looks like a pretty good spot to me, I could use a short walk"
Officer: " That sounds like a pretty good spot to me. Have a safe walk and a good nights rest, I expect this car will still be sitting here until tomorrow, right?"
Me: "Yes sir!"

About a dozen or so years ago I was returning to Texas from a car meet by some club, called S2ki, and was hauling ass in a little yellow sports car, through rural Alabama in the middle of the night. No traffic at all. In fact I hadn't seen a car headlight beam, except for my own, for over an hour. In a state that has no other legal remedy for dealing with speeders from outside the state except jail, I was cruising along at about 95 mph or so, when I spotted a patrol car hiding behind a tree - at about the same time my V1 started signaling wildly. I didn't even lift; out he comes with blues flashing!

I pulled over, and since my S is fixed to open the top while still moving, I opened the top while stopping. The older gentleman officer with a heavy regional accent, asked for my license and registration, so I politely handed them to him with a slightly guilty looking smile. He goes back to his vehicle, and after a while he comes back to my door, and - well I was prepared to be handcuffed - but he said, "Mr. Copeland, as you probably know, the reason I stopped you is that my radar said that you were driving a bit too fast. And giving my papers back, he smiled and said could you please slow it down? Please drive the speed limit while you are in Alabama; and be safe!

I just thought the tolerant attitude - might have had something to do with our both having white hair... LOL

Having your car in the intersection with a red light is not enough to issue a ticket in California. You must have entered the intersection on a red.

I don't think so as it is car that is ticketed not the driver which is a good thing.

WHAT! Bad car, bad car. A couple years ago I was picking up my grandkids at school and was running late. So I made a rolling stop at a stop sign - yep there was policeman who followed me into the school lot. Grandkids thought it was funny. I had to pay a fine and was offered the choice to take an online driving course to avoid having my insurance company be notified.

I know exactly what you mean. I think people call that "California stop". I am very wary of Stop sign. I tend to exaggerate stop by ensuring my car lurches a bit. I told my son when he started driving to always make a full stop. I think he continues to observe that.

Speed cameras are everywhere in D.C. I used to frequent there about 5 years ago. The D.C. requirement is that if they post a sign there's a camera there. I was playing with a local Porsche convertible on one of my first visits there. All of a sudden he slowed down and pointed at the sign. When we came to the light he warned me about the speed cameras there. There's no parking in town either but that's another story. As much as I like D.C. I found that D.C. is not a very car friendly town.

The +1 has gotten a couple of speeding tickets on the SE/SW Freeway. There are lots of cameras here for all kinds of purposes. And there is parking, but not cheap. Lots of encouragement to take the Metro. Major new development around Metro stations. Of course, not much riding going on right now.
