Sports car racing in the 50s

I just read L.J.K. Setright's book, Drive On! He describes how in one early road race, the driver could only find the road by looking for the treetops on either side, as there were so many people in the way.
It's an excellent book, and I got it on Amazon for $30. I think the paperback version is out now, so I'm sure you can get it for less.
If you've ever read the UK car mags on a regular basis, I'm sure you've come across Setright before. He's a great writer.

Certainly Setright is well known. I always found his work difficult to read. Somehow it just didn't flow right for me. I do recall he did a very nice early piece talking about the Japanese cars and he was one of first to put WWII aside and praise them for their car building efforts.

I just picked up Men at Speed for under $4 in a used book store today while I killing time waiting for my mother at the doctors. It was written in '61. On page 3 is a photo of de Portago in a Ferrari at Sebring and they talk about the tragic prophacy article that was published a few days before his death.

In '50, according to my entry list, he raced a marron Ford special. The following year, '51, he returned with the Ford but it was painted silver.
