I'm not sure that I understand the point. What earth shattering insight could one get from spending all of those hours in a Wal-mart?

Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it is surprising difficult to recognize what (later on) is obviously a stupid idea.

I guess so but it seems to me it should've been real easy to see what an idiotic idea spending all that time in Wal-Mart was right from the beginning.

Yes, it should have been. It also should have been pretty obvious that invading Iraq ... never mind. Anyway, the interesting message here is that decision-making can become easily subverted by the mind's ability to rationalize away things that don't match up with the desired reality. From the moment the idea was conceived, any nagging thoughts about how stupid it was were probably instant suppressed before they ever reached the conscious level.
