By adding more fuel after the nozzles initial shut off (filling to the brim or topping off) can cause damage to evaporative emissions system or render it inoperable. “Topping Off” may cause fuel to enter the charcoal canister, or carbon filter, which is designed only for vapor. By digesting the fuel rather than vapors will cause engine stalls until it purges itself of fuel, or it is replaced.

NO! I never "burp" the pump in any of my vehicles as it can damage the ERG canister. Besides, in the S if one does, it pukes out (as I learned in NJ where they pump gas for one).

I am guessing that in your MG you may experience "vapor lock".
Great minds think alike. I agree. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Matt, was it one of those gas stations that also sell beer? If so, did the driver fill up at the same time as the car???

I was chatting with the owner of a MG repair/restoration shop and asked him if he had any narrow insulation spacers as I was thinking I would move my SU carbs further away from the heat of the exhaust manifold. He suggested adding Star-Tron to the gasoline. I plan to test it out starting tomorrow; heading to warmer temps.

It was suppose to be 93 octane? But after refueling and adding the Lucas fuel treatment the problem went away. So I can only guess that I had a dirty sensor that Mike (Lovestodrive) suggested because no one else that filled up at that Exxon on the drive had a problem. The problem went away.

Additive didn't seem to help at all. Could be time for a complete carb rebuilt with new parts as its been over 32 years but I still don't trust new parts as much as old, so I going to do a by-the-numbers tune-up first.

It happened to me again once on the drive this weekend at the Hagerstown Meet. I again, added Lucas fuel treatment on Sunday, and it has not happened since I filled up at the Costco with Top Tier 93 Octane fuel in Frederick, Md.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Have you tried cleaning the IACV valve? Here's a link:

Matt, Not sure if your car was manufactured after they fixed it, but AP1s did have a problem with the MAP sensor which caused stumbling and stalling out at idle. Most people whack it to try to fix it, but you actually need to use a zip tie to hold the sensor tight to the plug.
