And a steak knife too!
I got my license in 1967, long before the oil producing nations realized that they could manipulate the price of oil. Back then there were frequently gas stations on each of the 4 corners of a major intersection. Often the competition was fierce and a price war would break out. There were some very strange promotions.
Back then gas was about .24/9 per gallon in Brooklyn, NY. There were some off brand stations, Safeway and Merit, and every now and again during a price war, the price of a gallon would fall to as low as .19/9 per gallon. Things got so competitive that from time to time the stations would run a promotion. If you'd buy 10 gallons or more, you got a free steak knife or drinking glass (real glass, not plastic). Needless to say, being a 17 year old who had just gotten a license, and with an old 1961 Chevy Impala to share with my sister, we got plenty of steak knives. I think I still have a few of them.
Anyway, the cheapest price that I remember paying is .24/9 per gallon, full service, and .19/9 per gallon (also full service) during a price war.
How much did you pay way back when? (Did you get the steak knife?)

Semi-On-Topic:
If I had my son's scanner hooked up (and knew how to use it
), I would post my father's GAS RATION card....from the early 1940's during WW II.
I remember him talking about how people would sell their credits
to a neighbor....not sure how it was done.
Also, there was a program whereby the country doctor could get more gasoline
than the typical driver.

I have two prized Mobil glasses in my automobilia collection. One displays a Jaguar XK120, the other an Austin Healey 3000.
I was licensed in 72. Oh, and I failed the test on my first try!!!
Never saw gas in the teens after I got my license.
