I agree with what Bill said about how you should adjust within a few days. But proper alignment even with progressives is essential. I've had a time or two where I went back to the eye doctor because they were not working out after a week or so as they should and they have discovered the lens were out of alignment just enough to require a replacement.

I read that if you put on a pair of glasses that turned everything upside down, in a few days your mind would adjust to it and turn things right side up. Anybody else heard that?

The images formed on the retina are upside down, and the brain turns them right side up.

Here is an article which explains several studies such as you are talking about.

How do we see things upright if the image formed on the retina in our eye is an inverted one?

I tried the progressives several years ago. My vision changes too frequently to keep them current economically. The changes may be related to a heart medication (amiodarone) that I take but the doctor has not said so definitively.

So, I now carry reading and computer glasses and change whichever needs updating from time to time.

oh heell no. my eyes are that bad. I can still pass a drivers license eye exam with no problem without my glasses.
I just have a hard time following a 2" golf ball past a hundred and fifty yards. I know, first world problems.

Sort of like learning to ride a backwards bike?
It might not be as easy as you think it is.
