Default Vacation Plans - 2025 Edition

Another year has flown by. So far, the only trip we have planned is our American Cruise Lines trip down the FL Gulf Coast from St Pete to Key West and back. Really looking forward to it…a celebration of Vito and my 20 years of unwedded bliss. And to think some of you met him for the first time at Spring Fling in Berkeley Springs WV. As I recommended to Gary in the weather thread, one of my fave restaurants is El Siboney in KW. Really looking forward to their great Cuban food. I am sure the food will be superb on the ship, too, as always. And we will be sailing on a big catamaran! A new fleet of ships for ACL. None of their ships carries more than 120 passengers. My kind of cruising.

Checked out the SF 05 thread…lots of memories there.

Then…

And now…

That sounds like a cool cruise, nice choice. I think a smaller group of 120 or less would be my preference if I ever did a cruise, not a fan of the gigantic ships and crowds.

Having visited Key West a couple of times my favourite adventures there were a jet-ski tour around the island (they start right where the cruise ships dock). We also loved the side trip to Fort Jefferson, but it is a day long event with it being about 75 miles from KW.

In a perfect world we would be planning for a summer trip to Cuba , nothing better for us than a beach vacation. Our 2024 trip was fantastic and we would love to go back. Unfortunately the beautiful country of Cuba is under tremendous stress - electrical and fuel shortages, food pressures, hurricanes , earthquake, economic uncertainty, boy have they have been hammered in recent months. We will likely be vacationing in a different country 2025.

We are planning to visit Portugal in 2025, the timing of the visit will depend on airline ticket pricing as we are pretty flexible. We will be in the Porto region of the mainland. The one bucket list place for me to visit is Fatima, I look forward to seeing that historic location. We will be visiting relatives so they will take us around to their favourite spots.

We just booked 9 days in Antigua for our 10th anniversary. I won the hotel portion at a golf outing last year. We have to pay the all-inclusive fee which isn't cheap, but I suspect I can eat that much daily! We expect to use mileage for airfare.

Staying at Hammock Cove. 5 Star hotel and one of the restaurants has a Michelin star.

I've got 9 days in Costa Rica coming up in January. I will get home and have 36 hours before I take off for South Carolina (my daughter's) and then down to Fort Myers (my sister's) for a yet to be determined amount of time.

Gary, we went to Antigua a couple times many years ago. It wasn't much of a tourist destination at that time. It was a most enjoyable place.

No spring plans yet. I think I've mentioned I think it's time to check out a couple national parks in Utah, maybe in September, if I get around to planning a trip.......

I have gotten travel out of my system, especially flying. I've been putting off checking on tickets to FL in March since my bride insisted we visit the FL family over the spring break. Maybe I'll schedule a drone to take me.

The flying is part of the reason I haven't planned anything. Get to the airport two hours early, the layovers, the flight schedules, the expense and then you rent a car. Oh, and the packing and luggage limit issues....Road trips have just been easier. However, we kind of limit ourselves to no more than two days to arrive at our destination, and we've been to many places that is within that drive time.....

I was talking to my Dad today and was saying how I wish it was so much easier to fly. It’s hard because you have to plan the flight so far in advance. It would be nice if you could just go to the airport when you are ready to go and buy a ticket.

Why is it so hard for you, Robb? What do you base your travel on? What keeps you from planning to go see him in 6 weeks or so?

I say 6 weeks as an arbitrary number but I only fly Southwest and if I don't book 2 months in advance, or more, 6 weeks seems to have good prices for flights. I'm going to CA in January in order to drive to AZ for my favorite annual ElliptiGO meet that is in the Scottsdale area on Jan. 17-19th.
