I agree rarity can play a role in values. And the "biggest" pushers for that is "auction houses". They love to make a big deal about that so the owner has "bragging" rights.
That said I would put the S2000CR (factory built club racer) in the same category as the MGA Twin Cam. Both are rare but neither are really practical for every day use. But it will in time become the sought after S2000.

MG Twin Cam prices have been flat for the past 10 years until this year. And their value on average is still only $3k more than an average MGA. Anyone who actually drives their MGAs would not want one. Same is true of the MGC. A very poor handling car that can be bought very cheaply, often half the price of an MGA.

I have heard a lot of not so good things about MGA twin cams from owners and classic car dealers but again like I posted before people are sheep they go buy (pun intended) what they see on t.v. and read in magazines. Look at the Ferrari dino 246, for a long time it was the unloved Ferrari because it was a V-6 and didn't even have Ferrari badging on it, it was considered a Fiat. It was a sub 50k car for a long period then it fell into favor now it is a 300+ car. Same with the Ferrari GTO although now supply and demand does come into play. Back in the 60's when they were done with them in racing nobody wanted them it was just an old racecar one of them even got donated to a high school shop class. Currently you want a Ferrari GTO well you better have about 40 million or more to spend and even if you do have that much if someone doesn't want to part with theirs then you are out of luck.

Got to tell you my Ferrari GTO story. MG friend bought a new Porsche which he had when he was racing at Sebring back in the day. After the race he was offered the chance to buy a Ferrari GTO that had raced. His loving wife said HELL NO, we can barely afford the Porsche. Several years later they got divorced. One day after that he was reading about a GTO that sold and its race history. He determined it was the one he had to turn down. I forget how many millions it sold for but he took the write-up and hung it on the ex’s door with a note saying this is what you could have split with me if you weren’t such a bitch.

Since when do husbands listen to their wives. Not my personal experience. Back to the topic: I don't care what my S is worth now or in the future. I love driving it and I'm going to drive the holy piss out of it for as long I can. I just hope I last as long as it does.

IMO, the S2000 will hold its value. Esp if you have a complete OEM one. No mods, no rust, no major body panel damage. All numbers match. May actually rise in value, as the number of similar spec'ed models come off the road.

Aw man that is rough! Look at it this way if he had bought it, it could of ended up in one of those stories were husband and wife get divorced and wife puts multimillion dollar car up for sale for pennies on the dollar just to piss husband off!
Last one I know of that sold publically went for 38 million.

I had an interesting conversation with my 21 year old son about this thread. I mentioned that many people in this thread don't believe that the S2000 will drastically increase in value. He completely disagreed. I said that it seems to me that the S is not the kind of car that the millenials lust for, they lust for BMWs.

He told me that I was absolutely wrong. There are some in the "Miata school" but most lust for BMW M series and/or the S2000. He feels very strongly that as soon as the millenials start to earn some money they'll scoop up every S2000 they can find.
