Are we better off today? Probably not, but many of us are probably not too much worse off either. It's our kids who will probably be much worse off if nothing is done.

Mich real estate has taken a bath. As for inflation, I don't feel it.... sure gasoline is now $4/gallon and maybe the wife would disagree when it comes to food but really inflation - I'd have to say what inflation? We've felt no pain. I'm sad I don't have the "hope" I felt a decade ago. I see Obama asking for $500 million to equip Syrian rebels, etc. and think about how far that much money could go if focused on something local ----- pick the state and a project ----- to pull along and help within. Sorry to go Political but I get bent out of shape with it all at times. Jerry, If you feel the "hope" in PA, do let me know.

The reason it is and has been so great is the system of limited government that was established. Freedoms come from Providence, not the whims of rulers. We keep the power to forcibly remove a tyrannical government. Government was limited so industry could increase. It did. No where in the history of man have so many people been elevated in wealth creation than in the USA.
The more we move to government control and socialism (that has always been shown to be inefficient at best, murderous at worst) the more we suffer and decline. The entire meltdown we had was due to government interference in the marketplace including mortgages and securities. Our friends to the north did not have the real estate meltdown because they had mortgages based on qualifications not arbitrary quotas (as Barney Frank/ Bill Clinton demanded and got)
...
Materially we are better off but with more than half of the population on the government dole, I fear the decline of the republic. The government is not the solution to everything. A limited government is a necessary evil. It is the individual looking out for his interests that has the citizens best interests in mind, not some politician.

^^ I was thinking more like sweet to eat. (as in Eat a Peach; hence the Allman Brother's reference) Goes either way -- a pleasant treat, or a more mild version implying "Bite me." I let the reader choose whichever is the more appropriate reply depending on their current point of view.
I suppose one could also believe I subconsciously was referencing Duane Allman's philosophy regarding revolution, but I can assure you that is not the case as it would then be a political statement. Eat a peach for peace, man.
