I did my unattached garage in vinyl. White vinyl. That's been enough to discourage me from using it on my house. I am constantly finding bird droppings on it with berry stains left after I wash them off.

I have never heard of Hardi Plank. Is it a cement product?

Matt, thanks for the tip. I'm not sure those windows would help me very much as I am only going to replace the two or three that have rot.

Neither. Our house has stone, brick, and HardiePlank siding. This is a composite that is cement based, but will eventually require re-painting (it is 11 years old, and still looking good!) It looks just like wood, but doesn't have all the bad features of wood siding. I would recommend it for anyone thinking of re-siding their house or building a new one.
Someone asked about HardiePlank siding....

Gene already gave a bunch of info

Some folks have strong opinion against vinyl unless it's the original siding. They feel putting vinyl over old siding is just an opportunity to end up with rot, as moisture gets underneath. I'm not so sure I'd disagree. We have the vinyl trim on the outside windows sills and trim boards. One window was not sealed properly from the outside and we ended up with some rot on an inside sill. Fortunately it was caught in time.

I have a bunch of rotted windows and trim boards that need to be replaced at my house. I had my guy over today and he will be working on it later this summer or early fall. I think it pays to keep up with this stuff and get it replaced when you find it. Rot never sleeps.

I replaced plywood siding with Hardiplank (fiber cement, as previously stated) about 7 yrs ago. I also used Harditrim rather than wood for the vertical trim that surrounds it. The only way to go, in my opinion. Of course I couldn't buy it off the building supply floor because my wife had to have the beaded product that was, and still is locally, not routinely stocked. At the same time, I used a wood brickmold to surround the Anderson clad windowns and the sun made this an annual maintenance product. Last year, I pulled the wood brickmold off and replaced it with an identical profile product made by Azek (pvc). It's a little tricky to paint but after one year, it looks like new.
