Three or four years ago, I went to the eye doc thinking my sunglass prescription for distance needed changing because I could not see out of them as well. I had always been nearsighted and worn glasses from the age of 14 (mainly to drive). I assumed there would be a change to make the glasses stronger. Nope...my distance vision had actually improved! Reading had never been a problem. So I decided to ditch prescription glasses altogether and have not worn them since.
I got a new eye doc and saw her yesterday for a general checkup. My distance vision is still good enough to drive without glasses, which is great. My reading has gotten worse, but not enough to get prescription glasses, at least not yet. I have a pair of the cheapy ones from the drugstore which work OK if I need them. My right eye is stronger for distance, but weaker for reading. The interesting thing the doc told me is that a type of cataract causes the improvement. Something called Second Sight. It is supposed to be temporary but so far mine has lasted quite awhile. She said I do not have any problem with cataracts. Glaucoma number needs to be watched, though (mine is 20, which is borderline), so I'm going back in a couple of months for another eye pressure check on that.
Any of you had this improvement in eyesight?
As you can see, this post from above is 2016. Got an eye check today and my distance eyesight is still very good. Basically 20/20. Still wear the store bought readers to use when needed. No evidence of glaucoma and keeping an eye on cataracts. I am very happy with these results.
I've got getting glasses on the list I tried to get an appointment with an optometrist but there was an eight month wait so I put it off. Also considering laser surgery but figuring it would be cheaper to get glasses.
Not only cheaper but laser surgery (and cataract surgery) carries risks, which would keep me from getting it. I am also very reluctant to get cataract surgery, so hoping that decision is far off. I realize for the majority the surgery works well, but if you know anyone who has had complications (as I do), it will definitely give you pause.
Wore glasses from the third grade until I went for a driver's license exam after moving to Mobile, AL in my early 30s. The examiner asked me to repeat a vision test without my glasses and I did better than with them on. So no vision correction lenses endorsement on my license ever since. But my near vision is, like most folks, getting worse with age. I got along for years with 1.25 reading glasses but recently "upgraded" to 1.50. I tried prescription reading glasses once and found them to be no better than "cheap drugstore" otc glasses. Of course everyone's eyes are different and correcting for myopia is definitely best left to a good ophthalmologist.
Anyone had laser surgery for vision correction?
I had cataract surgery in both eyes over 39 years ago. They didn’t have the technology back then they have now so 1 wear glasses. My wife is getting corrective laser surgery in both eyes in May. She won’t need contacts or glasses anymore and she is thrilled about it. Her Doc is the #1rated surgeon in our state. .

I don't wear glasses unless I am at movie theater or driving at night. I have strong right eye and weak left eye which works out fairly well for both far and near. The other day, I came across my old pair of glasses I had when I was in high school. These were photochromic lenses but they don't work anymore. The style is hideous but in a pinch, I could probably wear them which means my eyes have basically stayed the same since my high school days.

I use store bought readers, I have them all over the house, in my purse, cars, etc. I've grabbed a few that have more magnification in the last few years. Distance vision is fine.
I do have the beginning of cataracts, (age appropriate, as they say). The doc is watching them carefully. If the fluid from cataracts leaks, the fluid contains protein which could aggravate the other eye issue I have, which is currently dormant. Eye pressure is fine.
I would have cataract surgery if recommended, but would not be signing up for lasix surgery. I'd wear glasses instead.
