Default VTEC opinions?

So, I passed the 600 mile threshold recently, and I've been easing into the higher RPM range little by little.

From what I'd read on the main talk board, I was expecting a significant power boost when the tach got up into the 6Ks -- there are all these guys oohing and aahing about VTEC this and VTEC that and how wonderful it is.

Now, I haven't punched it up in that range (for one, because I'm trying to continue to take it easy on the car; for two, because I don't drive by punching generally; and for three, because it's just plain bad form). But a steady increase on the throttle past 6K and into the low 7s really doesn't produce the boost that I was expecting (from having read all that stuff). The best I can say is that, unlike most cars I've driven, it doesn't fade up there.

I'm doing all this at about 7500', and this NA engine isn't exactly a rocket ship at this elevation, so maybe that's what's happening -- that is, maybe at sea level, things go zoom when the VTEC kicks in.

Or, maybe, those guys all subconsciously stomp the pedal at high RPMs and they just think it's the VTEC.

Opinions? Thanks, HPH

PS: Don't get me wrong. I'm quite happy, even ecstatic, with this car's performance -- and this comes from someone whose last car was an STi. I'm moving to sea level soon, so some of these high-elevation issues will vanish anyway. Also, we're driving it to sea level (Florida), so you'll be hearing about another long road trip in September.

Run it to second gear and hold it at about 3000 RPM's .... then floor it .... when the tach enters vtech range, if you don't feel a significant increase of power then something is wrong. Try the the same in third and fourth gears.

The stock car is nimble and quick, but it is far from a dragster. This is why so many have gone with forced induction or changed the rear-end gearing .. looking for that extra zoom.

There is a difference in the VTEC kick one gets between the S2000 models made before, and after 2004. There is a much more pronounced kick when VTEC hits on the older models. I have an '01 and an '05 so I know what I'm talking about. The '04 and '05 years have more low end torque but less kick when VTEC does engage. Seeing that you have an '05 the sudden thrust will not be as pronounced as it is for the owners of '00 to '03 models.

There is a significant change when I hit VTEC range in my car, but it is an 01. It gives the feeling of a sudden boost.

Vtec won't work to it's full potential without flooring it.

You won't feel vtec as much if you're slowly accelerating. Punch it my friend and then see. I don't know where vtec kicks of an 05. If you're going to play, the trick is to keep it in vtec when you shift.

My 02 kicked in at 5800 rpm untill i reset to come in at 4400rpm. I

I have an 05 just turned 3300 miles. I babied it till 600 miles like the manual says. At 601, I puched it and when I hit 6K rpms, a sweet feeling.

Defender.

I'm running a supercharger and an AEM computer system and a long list of other stuff. I put 347hp on the ground.

Superchargers love low vtec and the AEM lets me tune for it. I don't think it would work out on an n/a that low to any great advantage.

I know you can dropp it a couple hundred rpm using a vfac system running n/a without any additional modifications. I don't know what your hp gain would be tho.

with the 4.77 gears and the 2.2 liter engine there is plenty of "ohhmmff" below 6000 RPM's ... so I would like to lower BOTH the vtec AND the rev limiter ...

would a vfac do this ? Thanks.
