Default What to do?

I've just found out that my employer is going to outsource development of a software upgrade "offshore." (Damn, I hate that mealy-mouthed weasel word! )India is all the way across the ocean, therefore "overseas" not offshore (Key West or Catalina Island.)

They're going to use a lot of my knowledge to implement this project, if I don't have the self-respect to leave tomorrow morning. I can't really afford to take two weeks vacation in lieu of notice, but I will have no self-respect if I aid and abet this abomination.

Sorry for the verbal diarrhea, but I needed to vent!!!

I'll probably become the lowest life form on earth, because I want the luxuries that a couple of years more employment will provide; but I'll have no self-respect for the rest of my life.

Corporate America sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I left the firm that I was with the day that tax season ended. I couldn't stand it there. Had I stayed I'd be miserable and have no self respect. I'm officially on my own.

I'm not telling you what to do, only you can decide, but its a big world out there. If you're unhappy in one spot you might want to try another.

Thanks for the encouragement, Rob! I suspect that I'll come up short of the balls necessary to do what I think is the right thing. Oh well, I've done things I'm not proud of before. 4 more years...

I found it very difficult to work at the firm I was with. I was very frustrated and unhappy. I've never been able to work anywhere if I couldn't wrap my arms around my work. When I gave notice I felt liberated.

If you can manage to be happy with the work you're doing, four years isn't such a long time, but if you're unhappy the days go very slowly.

Agreed. As always, you hit the nail on the head. I've just got to decide how much of a whore I'm willing to be.

Don't apologize. I for one, love it when Vintage folk share problems and look for advice. Goodness knows, I've been doing more than my fair share lately.

RedY,

The whole "I outsourced my soul" is nonsense. There's a reason why all the biggies are outsourcing their work, and that's to stay competitive. Your company could 'hang tough', and then in four years you may ALL be looking for work.

For my business I buy products from offshore, coincidentally for imported cars and motorcycles. I have salespeople, warehousing, marketing and admin people all working. Plus, there are all the ancillary people who benefit from my business, such as FedEx, UPS, the government (!), Staples, my accountant and bookkeeper, etceteras. And then there are my customers, who sell the product at an even higher price, and have all the same staff and warehousing needs.

If I sourced all my stuff in the States, well, I couldn't. I'd be working for someone else, NOT contributing as much as I do now to the U.S. economy. However, I do get valuable "PRODUCT" from the States in the form of marketing, sales, and product concepts and R&D, for which the "manufacturers" are paid well.

BTW, I do have some parts made in the States, but it frankly makes more fiscal sense not to.

It's a global economy now. Buy U.S. when you can, but not at the expense of your family. Indians are people too!

So do you have any involvement in this project? Or is it being totally outsourced? That is the name of the game these days. Most of the contractors in my office working on a big development project are Indian. They are very good.

I don't know if it's wise to just walk out. Take a deep breath and assess the situation. Something happend at my old job and it was really tough for me and some others. I wanted to walk out too but my buddy calmed me down and I eventually found something better within 6 months. You owe it to yourself and your family to make the right call. Don't let your emotions cloud your judgement. Good luck.
