Default What does "residency requirement" mean?

Besides the "six figure income" that I keep hearing on the TV and radio (I listen to the radio when I commute), I also noticed this little phrase with ads by car dealers: "residency required" or "residency requirements apply". So what does that mean? Is it only a CA thing or do other car dealers in other parts of the country/world also say the same? Can someone explain it to me please. Thanks.

My understanding is that CA has some weirdness when it comes to buying cars from out of state. It's certainly not anything I've heard in Texas car ads.

We hear that here in Florida as well. No clue what it means, though.

I can't imagine that they could refuse to sell you a car based on where you live, although they could probably limit special prices and loan rates. HPH

I haven't heard that one. I've heard of discounts for Disneyland if you live in certain zipcodes, only.

It's part of the disclaimers here in Massachusetts as well, though this might be from ads targettted at the national audience.

Here, it means that you must live in a certain state or area to qualify for the discounts they're offering in the ad. (I think)

Yes, this is true. Someone asked if I can get discount tickets to Disneyland for him and so I looked into it and found out that my ZIP code does not qualify for the discounts.

As for the "residency requirement" part, I guess it is announced in some states other than CA, but so far, no one knows what it means. Being in CA, my initial thoughts was that has something to do with the illegal alians (but let's not go there, please).

It probably refers financing deals. In order to get the loan terms, you need to have established residency in one place for a certain amount of time. They may also be requiring you to own rather then rent.

It refers to prices, rebates, financing or lease deals that are only offered to residents of a specific area. For example, one of the big 3 may decide that sales of full size pickups are lagging in the Los Angeles area. They want to offer some special incentives there. But they don't want people in the outlying rural areas to get the special deals because they already buy lots of trucks anyway.

If you go to www.gmbuypower.com and click the "Current Offers" link it will show you all of the special offers that are available for your zip code.

I live equal distance between Sacramento and Reno. Recently, I was comparing car prices from dealers in each town (state). When I called my credit union, they told me they did not do car loans for out of state dealers. Something about Nevada not being part of the American Union (AU). I guess California is waiting for Nevada to accept the Americo as their form of currency.

Now I could have gotten a personal loan for $20K from the same credit union and picked up 45 AK47s in Boise, but the right to own cars is not one of our inalienable rights, I guess.

(Ouch, I'm feeling a strong tug toward the Politics sub forum)
