When the kids leave home
#11
We only had two sons but we spread them out. From 1980 through 2012 one or the other or both had rooms in our home. Now Rob is in Nashville, but AJ still lives in town here.
I miss having them at home. But I do enjoy the extra time and freedom Sandy and I have as a result, not to mention the dramatic decrease in the grocery bill.

I never had kids but the +1 has two. Both still live with his ex, at least for the moment. So they left his home in a way at an earlier age. It was not an easy time because they were relatively young. Things are better now. My nephew and his family (yes, those adorable grandnieces I post pics of) moved here last fall. We have gotten close to them and see them fairly often. As a matter of fact, seeing them today for lunch.

My son, the sole survivor of six pregnancies, and I have grown closer since he left home for college in '94. He's become the trusted friend and confidant I never had through my life. He's the instigator of the relationship. He began to confide in me with issues that I would never have asked my dad to discuss as I grew up. He's in a rocky period in a 7-year relationship at the moment and I've told him that he can move back in without prior notice. It will not happen but I'd he happy if it did.

Very nice that you have that relationship...it's never too late!

I think I coined the saying "adolescence is nature's way of getting parents ready for the kids to move out." Our kids were very independent in their thinking and behavior and didn't want to be told how to live, even when their behavior was pretty bad. Now that they have all been gone for many years, I miss them more than when they left. It may only get worse with time.

With FaceTime we probably see my daughter in FL more than we would if she lived here. I'll bet my wife was talking to her and the grandkids over an hour yesterday and over an hour today.
