Why?
Okay... it's a long running joke now that started when some guy posted a car for sale on Craigslist and in the details he listed the interior was "completely stripped inside because race car." Well, it got quoted by someone on Jalopnik and from that point on, it's been in countless memes and had become an expression widely used among car folk both young and old -- admittedly more of the young than of the old, but even old people read jalopnik.
It's a very popular meme now: Why? Because race car. Some of these are good for a few chuckles:

I was not joking with you.
But, Once upon a time (about five years ago) I was instructing at a track day at Summit Point Motorsport Park in late July. The ambient temperature that day was 104*F. I climbed into a students BMW 328 that had been totally stripped out (no inner door panels, just yellow duct tape covering the cables to un-latch the doors as the handles had been removed. No back seat. No carpet or sound proofing material, a full roll bar, five point harnesses, etc.) As we rolled onto the false grid waiting for our session to start, the driver reached over, and much to my surprise turned on the air conditioning. I looked over and noticed that the radio was also still in place and asked him why he had stripped out the interior with the exception of the A/C and the radio? His response almost floored me: "This is my daily driver".
