Default Windshield repair or replacement

My new car caught a stone recently. The damage looks like it might be repairable. My insurance told me it was my option if a repair is possible to do that or replace it.

I have had different views on repair vs. replace. While repair is less invasive, it would still leave at least a slight mar that I might notice. If I do a replacement, the down side is that it opens the door to potential issues or damage.

Am I over thinking this?

I had talked to the shop about this.
They said it should be done right away before crap gets into it.

I had one like this a couple of years ago. It was up high on the passenger side, so I had it fixed. It is still quite visible, but far from my line of sight and not even a concern from the passenger seat. I bought a new OEM windshield and new seals too. Ready for the next time if needed...

We have a glass repair shop that does excellent work. 5 star reviews and family and friends have gone there. That’s a big chip and it looks like it could get worse over time. Insurance should pay to replace the windshield. Peace of mind and you don’t have to look at that ugly chip.

Hi Ray,

it is in the line of sight for the passenger.

can i ask who you used? Were they for repair, replace or both?

i called Willis Chevrolet (this is for the Corvette) and the referred me to Demarva Auto Glass . They send their glasswork their. They also told me that they have heard really good feedback about MOT Auto Glass.

My fear with replace is if the cause other damage.

thanks,

Jim

I don’t think you are overthinking it Jim. I would try repair first. The more you get done the more chance there is for damage to occur. I would get it repaired and if you are then not happy with how it looks get it replaced.

my problem is that insurance won’t pay for a replacement if it is repaired.

Ugh yes that does make a difference, however personally I don’t like to replace original parts unless absolutely necessary and I did have a stone chip repaired on my S and you really, really had to look at it at a certain angle to notice the repair and I have o.c.d. and anything that is out of sorts always drives me crazy.

It is a big chip but I get your apprehension of a replacement. I had my 2017 Pilot windshield replaced before a 1,000 mile trip to California from Colorado, and they/Safelite didn't use the correct weather seal. It was noisy all the way there. I had them do it again once I got to California.

I had a chip "repaired" on the 2005 NSX, again by Safelite, and it didn't make any difference. It showed a few day afterwards. I've left it as I really don't want to have that worked on.

My 2017 Pilot had more small chips later and I ended up using a guy I found recommended in searches. The guy comes to the house and I was happy with his work each time. I sold the Pilot last year but I'll use Duffy again if I need a repair.

The man in the photo who did my Pilot a few times told me that you have to drill out the ends of the "stars" or cracks to stop them from spreading, before you put in the glue/cement. I think he is right! When Safelight showed up to do the NSX I asked him about that and he said it wasn't necessary. His repair didn't work. I don't like Safelight. They are too big and even getting ahold of them is a royal PITA. I could never get a person on the phone. It was all online. They didn't have the options I wanted.

^7-22-2023. Duffy's repairs worked! Drill the star ends.

^5-15-2024. All this stuff and it didn't hold. The star cracks are still there and I imagine will keep growing.

Well now, I think they have made your choice for you.
repair is ~$75-150, replacement is a more like a grand.
