Default The WORST drivers

I know this has been discussed here before but I found this interesting take while browsing today. From Jean Shepherd, the man who brought you "A Christmas Story", comes this thoughtful (hand hilarious) piece. Although first published in Car and Driver back in 1973, it still has the ring of truth. Those idiots in the next state over are THE WORST DRIVERS on God's green earth. At the end of the article, Jean concludes that two states are plagued with the worst drivers in America, Arkansas and Massachusetts. Having driven in both states, I am inclined to agree, although I think Louisiana and Florida are in the running as well.

Massachusetts always falls to the top of the list but while the type of driving is aggressive I don't find it to be the worst because it always seems to keep moving. I always refer to driving in the Mass/R.I. as offensive driving instead of defensive driving, you definitely can't show any weakness. Here in VT it is the N.Y. N.J. drivers that are the worst, they always have to be first and they pull right out in front of everybody and on the highway we have here with a passing lane they will drive in the passing lane under the speed limit and not move over to let anybody go by AND they all drive on top of each other there will be a mile of no cars and then about 7 cars right on top of each other with all of the cars in the parade behind the lead car on the brakes. A big thing with Vermont drivers is if someone is right on their but they will just drive slower and slower to piss the person off to me if someone is right on top of you just move over and let them go on their way.

Sorry Dave but whenever driving on the Ohio Turnpike it is the Michigan drivers that stand out as the worst.

Now if I'm in Florida I alway watch out for Florida drivers. They are just flippin' crazy!!!

That's a rapidly growing list.

I don't mind confident drivers or those who drive somewhat aggressively too much, so long as they don't do anything stupid. It's drivers who seem to have no concept about the operation of a motor vehicle who really bug me. Also drivers piloting huge SUVs and pickups who clearly shouldn't attempt to maneuver anything much bigger than a Ford Fiesta also get my goat.

Down South, we are big on random acts of kindness. Florida drivers seem committed to random acts of stupidity.

I can remember riding on rte 128 in Boston with my Dad when I was a kid and looking over at the speedometer and saying to him we are going 85 and everyone is passing us! And then noticing that people were even doing 85-90 in the breakdown lane and saying to my Dad OMG what if someone breaks down!?

See, and I've found Ohio drivers awful. Michigan drivers are bad for sure, but on the highway Ohio drivers ignore the left lane rule completely.

Texas drivers are equally as bad.
