Default Yellowstone trip...

Hey there Vintage,

I was recently offered an opportunity to head out to Yellowstone. However, its not for May, or the Summer or early fall, its for the end of February.

I've heard that Yellowstone and the surrounding area can be magical this time of year. Very different than non-winter of course. There's something like near 4 million visitors a year to Yellowstone but only about 90,000 a year between November and March. We'd be snowmobiling with the approved guides in the park, and free to roam outside the park on those days.

So, the question out there is- Has anyone else been out to Yellowstone in Winter? I know a few have been out there from the other threads I saw.

Thoughts, advice? Thanks-

Gary

Yeah, not my kind of weather.
Winter: Temperatures often range from zero to 20F(-20 to -5C) throughout the day. Sub-zero temperatures over-night are common. The record low temperature is -66F (-54C). Snowfall is highly variable. While the average is 150 inches per year, it is not uncommon for higher elevations to get twice that amount.

I've never been but I'm thinking the bears are going to be very hungry. I wouldn't park the snowmobile for long.

I've only been to Yellowstone in the summer but I have been to Yosemite in the winter, twice. My opinion is that you go, providing you have the proper clothing/gear. I love going places during the off season when they aren't crowded. It's so much more relaxing.

Oh, and please post photos as payment to Vintage for our free advice.

The bears are hibernating......

This may sound funny from a guy who hates cold but I used to live on the highline. Cold, brutal and beautiful in the Winter. Be safe and warm, take your camera.

I wonder if snowmobile suits have electric heat you can plug in like on a motorcycle.

The snowmobile rentals come with some type of clothing package of jacket/overalls, helmet and boots. The snowmobiles come with heated handlebars and I think seats.

I'm thinking I'm going. The airfare is ridiculous at about $1000 R/T, but I've got some miles to use for one way, so then its only about 1/2 the price, but I need to stay overnight in Bozeman until the rest of the group arrives the next day, which will eat a little out of the savings, but make it much more reasonable.

Temps are currently in the low-mid 20s daytime and single digits over night. I realize it can change, but in a few weeks, the normal average is upper 20s during the day. That's not too unreasonable - we've had that here for a good portion of the last few weeks.
