Default Car detailing question (polishing too much)

Hey guys,

Been reading the detailing handbook,

When polishing the car w/ a polisher (such as the g100)

You are obviously thinning out the clear coat correct?

If you polish the car too often, it is bad for the clear coat since it is wear out right?

I was thinking about attempting this, but i feel like i may over polish some areas, ( thinning out the clear coat uncessarily)

any tips on that? ( or should I just hire a professional to detail my car for the first time, and just learn from that first?)

thanks

good question-
you really wont thin your clear unless you use a rotary and you use it incorrectly- you can burn paint if you dont use it right.
for the above reasons you should use a random orbital machine (i use the porter cable) most likely... or are using a rubbing compound (i have not used a compound for about 5 years- modern polishes work so well that a fine cut and swirl remover are all you are likely ever gonna need).
we once calculated how many years it would take polishing once a month and it was a lot- you wont damage your clear.
and you should only need to polish a couple of times a year if you take care of the car.

definitely you should do this yourself... we are here to help.
read and watch our videos on the how to page and post back questions.

awesome, thanks a lot man, do you have the porter 7424? Seems like a nice investment,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NURjFvmDpEc

I watched that video, do I need everything in that video? pads and all the different types of polishes and wax ( if so are those those the best brands and products?)

What products do you recommend?
(I will keep reading on this section of the forum, probably answer my own questions )

Before attempting any of the thing in that video I should probably:

1) wash the car ( two bucket method w/ lamb wool)
(getting ride of all the bugs, etc)
2) dry it
3) clay bar it

then start to attempt the polish + wax

does that sound like the correct process?

Can all polish / wax be under the sun or is like a car wash where it is better under the shade (evening time)

Lots of question , sorry

You can't really screw up with a random orbital like the G100 or porter cable. If you're afraid of overpolishing certain areas, pick up a pair of halogens and inspect your work after you're done polishing each panel. S2000 paint is very soft, so it shouldn't take more than a couple of applications to get the swirls out (unless it's in really bad shape)
