1. wash with your normal car shampoo...
i use a rag that i only use on wheels, exhaust and underbody for this

2. best protectants are synthetics cause they handle heat a bit better than wax

3. i detail spray mine about once a week- when i do the wheels

do you have a problem that regular washing wont get?

They look pretty dirty. I'd like to make them shine. Should I just hit them w/ chrome polish?

lotsa metal polishes out there and the ones above are all great suggestions...

i would still give it a try first with your regular shampoo- you might be surprised. i also use the p21s wheel cleaner sometimes on stubborn pipes cause it is very gentle on the metal but harsh on the grime!

I have seen vinegar may work to get the old stuff off...and maybe use a polish after that...

I am going to try wheel cleaner first. I figure is it cleans metal wheels, then why not metal exhaust tips. Then I'll step up to viniger
