Clear coat chipping problem
My fender has been repainted because of a scratch... The clear coat is now begining to chip off. I remember reading in a different forum that this is somewhat repairable..
I can't seem to remember the exact procedure though..
i think it goes something like sanding down the protruding clear coat with 1200 grit? so it is blended with the rest of the paint. then polishing it with some kind of polishing compound?
is this possible? or am I just going to have to get it sprayed again?
btw, this is on a GPW.

By sanding and polishing you're still going to be left with that area having no clearcoat. Whether it will still match with the rest of the fender or not I'm not sure.
How bad is the chipped area? You probably might be able to get away with just polishing.

I'd be trying to understand what's making it chip off. If the repair was done incorrectly, say poor paint preparation, then sanding or polishing won't fix that. I think we need a bit more info before in order to better understand the problem. How and who repaired the scratch?

Bad repair. Take it back
Sanding or polishing is not going to fix this. Take it back and have it re-sprayed. Make sure after you have the area re-sprayed that you do not wax it for at least 60 days so that the paint can cure.
I bought the car not too long ago. and that was the story the owner gave me. It doesnt look horrible because its gpw..
I can't take it back to the shop, because im a new owner.
There is two areas where the paint is chipping. Right around the s2000 emblem/sid maker on the finder, and right where the side skirt meets the door.
the area where its chipping by the finder is very minimal, however by the sideskirt and the door there are big chips. But here it even looks like there is clear coat on the bottom of that.
They did a horrible job. My guess is poor prep work also. When they sprayed the fender, they just simpily sprayed over the emblem. they didn't bother to cover it.

also, how much would it usually cost for me to take a fender to a place to have it resprayed with clear?
im not looking for perfection. what id really want to do is just to try to repair it with myself... will sanding or polishing not work?

Getting a single panel re-painted shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars if it's done right. Most of it's the labor for prepping the panel.
