Default Dash cleaning woes

My dash was a little dusty, and I was ordering Lexol anyways, so I decided to get the three-pack and get lexol cleaner, treater, and vinylex. Big mistake.

The vinylex left my dash GREASY and really really shiny. I spent about an hour trying to wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. So finally I went and bought some ArmorAll cleaner wipes (which I used with success in my RSX). It cleaned all the crap off and my dash once again looked clean and matte-finished (not shiny like a cheap amusement park ride).

Then the next day I went to drive to work and my car's dash is all spotted. There's little speckles and dots all over. What is this?? Did I damage the plastic somehow?

What should I do? I can't seem to clean my dash without doing something weird to it.. I never had problems with armorall wipes on any other cars, is the S2k dash plastic really sensitive or something?

I'd recommend using Meguiar's Quik Interior Detailer (QID) to clean the surface and then use a product like 303 aerospace protectant or Sonus Total Eclipse sprayed onto a foam applicator and rubbed into the surface. I prefer the Total Eclipse because it doesn't require buffing out and gives a nice light sheen, not greasy at all.

Those ArmorAll cleaning wipes are filled with a strong cleaner. I wouldn't use them on anything on the interior. Under the hood, perhaps but not on the interior.

Good luck with it.

Megs QID followed by 303 Aerospace Protectant will give you a like new not shiney look with plenty of UV protection.

Cool, thanks! I never had an issue with the ArmorAll wipes before (they are called interior/dash wipes...) so I guess I'm a bit surprised. Hope I haven't damaged anything

The problem I see is that you put one product on top of another and the two may have reacted with each other. Don't think that you managed to completely wipe off the first product using a microfiber cloth. I mean, what was on the cloth? The Vinylex likely "sunk in" to the dash material. You are not going to just wipe it off. You need some kind of cleaner to get it out of the dash first before applying another product.
I've used "Low Gloss" ArmourAll or 303 on the dash. Both have worked equally well.

Sounds like you used too much Vinylex in the first place, or you sprayed it directly onto the dash, instead of a towel/applicator. You really don't need much product at all, and I don't have any problems getting a nice matte finish on my dash with it. Regarding the spotting problem though... try wiping it up with a damp cloth and see if that works. I'm not sure what else to recommend, though, because you definitely don't want to damage your interior or have chemical fumes floating around while you're driving

My fav dash cleaning tip - use Swiffer (sp?) cleaning sheets to remove dust/dirt build up every week or so. You an even re-use sheets. I keep one in my "cup holder." No residue and takes 5 seconds.

Every month or two, I'll use something real like those Meguiar quik detailer clothes for UV protection and to bring back the black.

I've used the armor all wipes before. They're fine. You just have to buff with a cloth immediately after using them.

That's not a bad idea. I keep a microfiber towel in my glove box for the same exact reason. The towel takes up more room, but it's 100% re-useable. If it gets too dirty, I just wash it.

I use vinylex on the plastic parts of my interior for the sole purpose that it doesn't leave everything shiny and greasy. I would agree with the poster above that stated you may have used too much. It's always left a nice even matte finish for me. In other words, give it another try. Spray it onto a foam applicator and apply it that way... a little goes a long way. I use it on the soft top also.

Some great advice so far. Here's what I do to clean my dash:

Every other month, I get a bucket of clean water and a mf towel and I wipe the interior down rinsing the towel in the bucket periodically. Using a chemical cleaner really isn't necessary and will probably do more harm than good. Water will do a pretty good job removing dust and any old protectant you have on there. After wiping down the interior, I spray some 303 onto a foam applicator and apply it to the dash and other vinyl bits. After I've applied the 303, I take a clean mf towel and buff the interior. This will remove any excess product and leave your interior clean with a nice matte finish. For quick cleaning I use meguiar's quick interior detailer. It's rather mild, smells nice, and keeps a nice matte finish.

I would suggest using my bucket of water and mf towel method to clean up the mess that your dash has become. Don't use any more chemicals as you're just asking for trouble Good luck!
