I've had good luck out of the Gunk engine cleaner (original) from parts stores. Last time I mixed 2 ounces of car wash soap with 2 ounces of purple power then 12 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Worked very well. foams up when you agitate it so you know what you've gotten clean.
I use a Auto Smart degreaser from this place http://www.detailsup...show=10&page=3.
I then use a boars hair brush on the real bad area's.
Then just use your desired dressing to give it a shine.
Just make sure to cover your alternator with a bag and not so spray water directly on any electrical.
I like to use a leaf blower or shop vac to get any excess water.
Here is the final product.

I just posted this in the cleaning valve cover thread, but I just did mine the other day. I like to use Simplegreen. I spray it on for about 2-3 minutes, non diluted and rinse VERY well. It can do damage if left on for a long period of time. Its pretty simple. I will do a write up today on it since I have got several PM's about it. Here is my bay with about 98k on it. Its on 02 btw...

I recommend you order a gallon of car dedicated APC, I like Megs APC+. I use it for everything, carpet cleaning in my car and in the home, cleaning the walls in my home and in the interior of my car. I just used it yesterday with an ikea dishwashing soft bristle brush to clean baked on dirt that had been accumulating for 24 years on the interior of my '89 Volvo 780. The important stuff is you don't let an APC like Megs APC+ dry on to paint/plastic. I've never needed anything labeled degreaser for my engine bay, and find an APC gives me more bang for the buck than a degreaser (the only one I own is Chem Guys Grime Reaper, can't recommend it).

All you need is an APC/Degreaser and a dressing. Unfortunately Turtle Wax CD2 Engine Detailer has been discontinued, I like something that doesn't make my engine bay look like a greasey pomeade someone would put in their hair. As with all things a natural look is the best look so I would research something that would give you a desirable effect.
So you need 6 things assuming an s2000, a dishwashing/soft nylon brush something not harshly abrasive and stiff, a car dedicated APC/Degreaser, a dressing that will work with the engine bay's heat, a cloth to insert into the mouth of the air box or a plastic bag, plastic syran wrap or a grocery bag to cover the alternator, and microfibers/cloths to remove water/dirt/dressing and I definitely using a cloth to evenly distribute the dressing.
Do not apply a lot of water pressure to your engine bay, I got a scare disabling my roomie's Ford Ranger, but it was due to a corroded battery cable I unplugged and it fractured and lost connectivity. I read a lot of threads where water gets stuck in electrical components and bricks a car, so I won't even touch my other roomies Jeep engine where the front is fully exposed. You should be fine on the s2000. I never had a problem when I owned one not knowing what I was doing.

{Both Engine Bays = Megs APC 10:1 (10 parts water:1 Megs APC) + Turtle Wax CD2 Engine Detailer. Megs APC being sprayed on then agitating the dirt with a 99 cent Ikea soft bristle dishwashing brush}

{Applying dressing directly by hand to the plastic, evenly spreading it and not overspraying onto exterior paint)
I recommend applying dressing by hand to the cowl and front of the engine bay to avoid getting dressing on the exterior paint. I would avoid drowning the battery in dressing and applying degreaser by hand to it. On the Rav4 you can tell I was lazy and didn't get it perfect but still got a desired effect.
I don't see any point in ever letting an APC/Degreaser sit, it can sit while you agitate the dirt to loosen it and then rinse it off. I definitely advise avoiding letting it dry on as I've seen funky effects on black vinyl from allowing it to dry.
