Ditto for me too, except that I use a boar's hair brush with 5" long supple bristles. If there are any problem areas (like dried on bird poop), I just brush with the grain of the top material. This method hasn't failed me in five years.

Use Dreft. Harmless to your cover, and will clean it well.
