Default Hand Compound

Looking to get rid of some random blemishes. Do not have a rotary tool. Only have elbow grease. Would a compound be the best product for this?

No compound used by hand is good. For relatively little money you can get a tool from Harbor Freight and be properly effective.

I do not agree.

While an machine polish would give the best result, any good polishing compound will work ok by hand. If your car was flawless (no swirls, holograms, dull paint) you may have a hard time matching the quality, of finish by hand but on everything else, you can only improve it.

I won't go into what polish is best because it has been address 10,000 times, but just make sure you use a soft cloth to do the polishing.

Good luck.

If it's just a light scratch here or there you can try Meguiars Ultimate Compound which is available over the counter at most auto parts stores/walmart. I've used it with success on door handles. Use with a quality microfiber towel or microfiber/foam applicator.

I hope you're not planning to do the whole car by hand

I agree with the above. M105 / Meguiar Ultimate Compound work well by hand. I've used them for cleaning up door handles as well. However dual action orbital makes it much easier.

jakescakes, your photos do an excellent job of showing the door handles, but they're really underexposed. If you have a "snow" setting or can increase the exposure compensation (something like +1EV or +2EV), the photos will look much better.

A polisher definitely takes a lot of the hard work away. If I was really angry and had to let some steam out, I would do it by hand

Lotion.

Wait... Wrong "hand compound".

Honestly, after buying DA years ago, I would never do an entire car by hand again. I want the result, not the days worth of work.

Thanks for the tip.

I have a lot to learn when it comes to photo taking and my old point-n-shoot camera can be frustrating. I've been looking to upgrade soon, maybe a S110.

I used to compound cars by hand when I was younger. It's A LOT of work but it can be done. Since I'm older I bought a machine. It's well worth the investment.
