"Its only a car..."
neighbors, wife, and several of my friends fit right in here...
my thoughts: to me its art on wheels... and i can choose to contribute!
plus its one of my toys- the car and the detailing of it.

My neighbor washes his car every sunday, rain or shine, starts at exactly the same time, 8:30am, and I've notice he washes it the same way every time (roof, trunk, hood, then around the car starting w/driver side front fender). And lest you think its some exotic supercar, its a subura outback. Rich, your neighors may think your nuts but I think this dude's nuttier.
There is a lot of good sense in that statement (though the person who speaks it probably doesn't appreciate all of it).
When it boils down to it, the S2000 is car, and when used as such, all it takes is one split (or fraction of) a second to total it. All that cleaning, polishing, time, effort, and money down the drain (and people online have to remind you that cars can be replaced).
It is however nice to detail for stress relief; the hobby is pretty fun. Online forums and new products keep the interest going. It also makes for a good photography subject if folks are into that too.
Some people reading this might disagree.. but what if you had a less expensive car, would you detail it as much? What about if you had a Ferrari? This of course leads to the fun in detailing is in the car that you're working on. Now, detailing is fun, but you're just walking around a car oogling at it; not as much fun as driving it (in my opinion).
On Autopia's forums, you'll have those people on both ends of the spectrum, and I can't help thinking what other priorities do the people with their garages full of exotics have other than keeping their cars shiney.
