I recently had to have a small dent removed at a local paintless dent place. He did a great job Cant even figure out exactly where the dent was before.

The guy gave me a brochure on a clear coat protectant called Leading Edge by 3M. It goes on in a sheet that is probably 1/8" thick. He said you cant see it when on the car except where it stops. It supposed to be removable. This is applied to the nose of the car only, usually.

Has anybody had any experience with this stuff? If so, lets hear it. The Good, Bad, and Ugly.

This would appear to be similar to Stongard, but not quite the same. The instructions for the Leading Edge product definitely indicate that it is removable.

I have no experience with either product, but it seems almost TOO good. Does anybody have either one on their car???

The main difference appears to be that the Stongard is shaped to match the car's contours; also, they recommend a trained technician does the install. Someone here on the board had this kind installed a few months ago, but was less than thrilled with the result. (The tech probably had a few Buds before doing it.) However, it looks like you can do the 3M Leading Edge install yourself. I can't imagine how well it would fit around the front bumper, if it only comes in strips. It could end up looking pretty hokey.

Do a search for "Stongard". I have the Scotchcal stuff on my car. My supplier talked to the Stongard guy and it's supposedly the same stuff. I put mine on myself but it can be tricky if you're not a handy kinda guy. I've been told the stuff can be removed using solar heat or a hair dryer and the paint cleans up pretty well afterwards. Most guys look at this as a permanent add-on. It's best to get the pre-cut kit though it's pretty pricey for you guys in the States it seems.

xviper is right, most of these products (stonegard, xpel) use the same 3M Scotchcal material. Xpel (http://www.xpel.com/paint/honda.html) have two pre-cut kits for the stook - hood, fender & mirrors at $190, and the bumper kit at $290. According to the xpel site, the material can be removed with the application of a little heat.

Here's what the xpel kit for the bumper looks like:

You probably need to have a few Buds before installing something like this

you can remove it, but it can't be reused... think of it as thick clear tint for the paint. I've got it on my car and the install in a PITA. All I know is this: every single car I get from now on will have stongard on it.

I am the one who installed Shings StonGard. I come to Texas alot to do installs if any of you are interested please E-mail me @ cory52299@aol.com and we can set up an install for you. Please let me know where you are and what kind of cars you have. Stongard is 9mil. thick and covers the hood, mirrors, fronts of fenders, bumper, door cups, and if you want door edges. Also if you want I can put it on the top of your rear bumper so you don't scratch it up. We also have headlight covers that are made of the same material only 80mil. If you would like you may call me @ (404)633-7083 if no answer please leave a message.

Thanks,
Cory
