made a mistake claybarring
oh man... so today i woke up early and decided i wanna detail my car. i washed the car as i usually would and then i decided to use the other half of my mother's claybar on it. it was all brand new and everything... so i tested the claybar on my driver side quarter panel since i got the door panel and the quarter panel painted a couple of months ago coz someone keyed my door, and everything worked fine... i then decided to work my way around going from the driver quarter panel moving to the trunklid/bumper and then to the other panel and so on...
my big mistake.... my last panel to do was the driver door panel, and seeing as the claybar didnt damage the paint on the quarter panel, i thought nothing of it. when i started claybarring my door and i went to knead my clay, i noticed that my claybar had turned new formula red... my initial reaction "oh SH!T!" so yea... i shoulda consulted here first or something... but for future reference... dont be as dumb as me and claybar fresh paint...
the damage wasnt too big, luckily it wasnt very noticable when i finished the panel... if it fades i'll warranty it with the body shop, other than that my car came out beautifully... will post pics up soon of the niceness of my smooth claybarred baby!

I don't think you made a mistake. Someone correctly me if I'm wrong, but isn't the clear coat tinted on cars that are NFR? When you clay if there's no wax on there then you're going to remove a slight bit of paint and if that happens to be red then the clay will turn red.
It's not a big deal and I wouldn't stress over it. Most people don't realize that clay is an abrasive. Be sure to use the finest clay you can find and use lots of lube to minimize the abrasiveness of the process. Also, once your new paint has cured make sure to wax it.

yup, all of our cars are clearcoated- there is disagreement about parts of red cars (the mirrors appear not to be clearcoated, and will give off red tint on almost any situation)- with a repaint you dont really know whether they clearcoated unless you ask (they should have, but there arent any clearcoat cops in body shops!!)-
i would not clay fresh paint (probably not a big deal though), but a coupla months is enough for any paint or clearcoat to cure.
lookin forward to seein your pics shotiable- its about time that you became an offical wacko!!

hee hee! thought so! i was thoroughly convinced that the NFR is the base coat... and i stood puzzled for a while looking at my NFR claybar going... how did i skip the clear and go to the base? i guess it IS from the mirrors then... i'll take pics tomorrow morning... since i when got done waxing the sun was down and my pics are grainy
