I was reading an old Maxim and they said that you can spray Pam all over the front of the car if you're going on a long trip, and then the bugs will just spray off with water...but does anyone know if that harms the paint at all?

I don't know about harming the hood - but if it's a hot day, it'll be great for frying a couple of eggs when you start feeling hungry.

LOL.........Throw some bacon on there too.......

Seriously, I've never heard of that method before. Here are some other options if you're interested:

1) Invest in a Colgan bra
2) Invest in StonGard protective stuff
3) Build up 4 or 5 layers of wax on the car, it will allow the bugs to come off very easily when you wash the car

As for removing bugs from the body, Simple Green Bug & Tar remover pads are great. The bugs come right off without scratching the paint

Jay I put the bra on the car (both the hood and grill) if I am going to take a trip where it could scare up bugs or rocks. Easier to clean the bra then worry about the paint. I have a white one and the "bug blood" is a pain to clean.
