Default Microfiber towels question

I purchased a nice large microfiber towel recently and when I first used it it was wonderful - very absorbant. However after washing it in the washing machine, it doesn't absorb water very well. It smears it around and eventually absorbs it, but I end up wiping harder than I want to.

Anyone else have this problem? What's the best way to clean/dry microfiber towels?

If you dried it with fabric softener - it'll do just what you described. Wash normally (fragrance free detergent would be best) and dry without the softener.

Sounds like fabric softener to me, too. No towels, microfiber or cotton should have any fabric softener applied - including those you use to dry yourself. They'll be soft, but won't absorb water very well.

I wash mine in a liquid detergent and air dry. No fabric softener, Bounce, etc. After they're dry, I may run it in the dryer on extra low heat to fluff 'em a little.
