Default pads and swirls

so i was detailing my car this weekend and was wondering if i was doing it too light or something.

my S hasnt been detailed in the 3 years that i have owned it so you can imagine the amount of swirls and surface scratches.

i clayed it and went with some SIP as i know i would be in for some work. Started with the white pad and still had some swirls. Stepped it up and went to the orange and still no luck.

Next was the yellow and it got most of everything out. Was this the right way to proceed or was i missing a step?

on my PC i went with 3 to apply then stepped up to 5 to work it in a bit more. Overall very happy but i feel i have reached the limit of my tools and maybe need to purchase something else to really remove it all.

will help to post a picture of the car so we can see what you are dealing with. befores and afters would be great.

you used the right process as far as deciding what pad to use. always start with the least aggressive combination you have and work from there.

depending on pad size, you might need to use speed 6. I was polishing a Laguna Blue Pearl S2k the other weekend and had good results with a PC, White LC CCS pads (5.5 inch) and using the max speed of the PC. we used an orange pad on the more severe areas and also had good luck there.

Hope this helps!

agree... as you are more comfortable with the machine move the speed up- and step up/ step down is the right on way to polish!

i was using a 6.5 pad ccs pad.

say i was using speed 6 i should go with a white then an orange

where as i am using speed 5 i can go with an orange and a yellow?

its bad weather here in cali and i cant get the light. Most people would be happy as 90% of the swirls are gone but i want almost 100% espically if i am going to do the work.

the sip didnt seem to need me to follow up with another polish. i went straight to wax. is this normal or did i miss that step. there was no haze and it look shiny

as long as it looks good to you, then no need to follow up. normally though, it is recommended to follow up with a finishing polish, especially on darker colors.
