Default Porter Cable Shopping List

Hi All & Wannabe

I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger and buying a PC - can you give me here in one place the current thinking on preffered model, counter weight, backing plate and pads (with start up quantities) I should be buying? Also I've seen some price ranges from 109, 119 through 169 & 200?

I'm planning to start from the beginning with my 04 Berlina - the car looks spretty good with hand applied Zaino - I think with the PC I can get ti look even better... I've started to see some swirl marks (particularly under flouescent lights) & I have few light scratches - I bought the 3m swirl remover for dark paint and am pretty sure I'll continue with Z2/ZFX & Z5 that I have an ample supply of.

Thanks in advance.

I got the 7336 3.7 AMP that came with a standard 6" counterweight and standard 6" sanding backing plate. I bought an accessory hook and loop (velcro) backing plate for pad usage. The total came out to about $135 taxed in CA (sales tax is 8.25%).

I think some of the other models (7336SP???) come with the 6" velcro backing plate included. It also might come with a hardcase which mine didn't come with too. It's been a while since I've shopped around for PC stuff.

I don't use the PC much since I've recently been converted to Zaino. It might be a little tricky buffing off the Zaino, i'd guess you'd sandwich a cotton towel in between the paint and PC. They also sell these polishing bonnets if you look around, but not sure how well those work.

Hmm, I wonder what would be a good way to buff with PC?

But applying wax and polish with PC makes the job much quicker and easier.

Anyway, hope this answers your question without confusing you with one of mine.

Good luck!

I bought mine from sports car care and it came with the counterweight and velcro backing pad for $120.00

best money i ever spent

I use mine with a white pad to put Klasse AIO on and i buff by hand

when topping it with S100 i use a gray pad and buff off by hand

for swirls - you can use a yellow pad with Meg dual action cleaner polish then you can zaino

good luck

Steve

a copy of a post i recently made (which has some of your answers and more than you asked!):

"some of us also use it to apply and remove wax or synthetics...
since i am one of those, i will give you some ideas:

first a great place for pad info:

http://www.properautocare.com/porcabac.html

you most likely need the black (they call it grey) pads and i like to use a lambswool bonnet that i use as backing only for micro fibers. for wax, i apply with the black pad and remove with the microfiber over lambswool. be sure to do very small sections with the p21s and remove it quickly (you are gonna hate this, but my preference is to use two machines- one to app and one to remove... you can just change your pads, but you will be changing a lot... another choice is to apply the wax by machine and remove by hand- still a big improvement over hand only, imo!)

next, a couple ideas:

1. you can either apply the nxt to the car and then buff it on or apply to the pad and buff it on... if you apply to the pad, pat the pad with the machine off on the body a few times to get the product onto the car.
2. always start and stop the machine on the car (dont lift it and turn it on or off)
3. cord over the shoulder
4. with p21s, i take it out of the can and rub the bottom onto the pad (rubber gloves are nice for this).

give it a try and post back any comments or questions-
good luck- you are about to become really addicted to detailing! "

btw, i got my pc from coastal tools...

Mike,

I thought i read that he had swirls - if that's the case a black (or gray) pad will not do anything to remove swirls (I guess you could fill them but not remove them) hence the reason for the yellow / white pads

Once the swirls are gone then the gray pads work great

good point bass-
i might have misread his post... i thought he was just gonna cover the swirls for now and use the 3m later.
you are right on if he is removing the swirls with the 3m!

my post was a copy of what i had written in another post for swirl covering with the pc...

I use the pc 7424, but there is also the makita and the dewalt I would also consider. the makita has a funny handle so beware. I would acquire something for swirls, compounding and of course a good polymer polish. I have dedicated orange pads, for smr work. I have a dedicated white pad for PRE SG and a dedicated Grey/Black for SG's. All Lake Country for me as well. ehine.ca takes care of me. If u are thinking Klasse, I would recommend a woolpad and MF bonnett as removal is difficult. As for polishes, I use Meg's DACP, Poorboy's line , WolfGang and Klasse
