question of how to maintain the top
As stated 303 Aerospace Vinyl works great to restore the black finish and help protect.
Wash the top first with a soft brush to get any dirt out, rinse well and let it air dry completely, like 12-24 hours.
Spray the stuff on your favorite microfiber applicator/towel and apply liberally to the top. Let it sit for a few minutes and wipe off gently. Should be dry to the touch.
303 is also great because you can use it to dress the engine bay, interior, and tires. It leaves a nice, matte finish that looks like-new, not greasy or overly shiny.
If you want to get fancy they have waterproof coatings on the market like Gtech |1 that basically repel water like crazy.

I have been using a Meg's Marine & RV Vinyl and Rubber protectant for my wheel wells, fender liners, my tires, etc. Looks amazing aftewards! I've never considered using it on my soft top because I didn't think I could? I can't be sure whether the soft top has ever been cleaned and protected - it is OEM, though. Is this Vinyl and Rubber protectant safe to use on my soft top?

EDIT: Did a quick search on what material the OEM soft top on an 02 is and learned it's vinyl so I'm assuming this cleaner/protectant may be safe to use....I hope.
