But, why not apply it on top of wax to the body panels as well?

Because it will strip off any wax that you may have put on the finish. It also tells you on the label not to use it on any plastics or any painted surface.

From the warning on the label, it sounds like it could damage the finish.

If you want to protect the finish, there are many good products that will do this for you, Zaino and P21S are the top two that come to mind.

Don't allow the RainX to contact your finish.

I've been using a coat of eagle one wax as you dry over my zaino lately, and it seems to work very well. Definite difference in shine and I've noticed that water still beads well from one wash to the next. Definitely recommend it for those in-between-zaino-application washes.
