it puts a layer in between to help reduce/prevent the swirls on the clear coat that you see.

detailing 101, but i personally use 2 buckets for the paint and 1 bucket for the rims with grit guards in each one

Also note there are spray waxes and spray detailers and hybrids. Spray wax such as Prima Hydro are great for maintenance waxes after a wash decent longevity, nice if you do it once a week. Mother's Gold Spray detailer is just that a detailer, it does not leave any "protection" behind. useful for pulling light dust off a car. Hybrids are like Meguaiers Ultimate Detailer is a spray detailer but leaves a polymer film behind that leaves a bit of a shine behind but with no real longevity.
