I put mine on if I'm going on the freeway for any distance. Otherwise it's in the trunk with 2 nylon mounting bolts that I keep taped to the back. I got stopped by a city cop about a year ago & I told him I'd just detailed the car, that the plate was in the trunk & I could probably have it back on before he was finished running my numbers. He said "put it back on" and let me go. I took it off after about a week and it hasn't been back on since.

What's the standard 'punishment' that goes along with getting caught? Fix it ticket the first time? Fine? Does this ever go on record as something that can affect ur insurance?

depends on the cop really. if he decides to, he can:

1. be a complete bitch and write you two tickets. one for not having front plate and another for a "fix it" ticket

2. write a fix it ticket, have you check back later or something

3. be cool about it and just don't pull you over like most cops in my area. KNOCK ON WOOOD.

edit* o yea. tickets will obviously raise your insurance and i think all tickets go on your record? someone can correct me

I thought only speeding tickets raise your insurance up. Parking tickets and fix it tickets shouldn't effect insurance, from what I know.

I have lived in San Diego for 5 years and Santa Maria now for 15 years. I have never had a front plate on any of my cars and I have never been pulled for it.

on my 05 i bent the plate to fit the shape of the area below drivers headlight. i used double face tape to hold it in place and its been there for 2yrs. yes i've been pulled over, for going quicker than traffic, no tickets issued but yes the chip looked for the plate. i credit an s owner i meet at a sacs2k meet with the idea for the placement.

Correct. Parking tickets, fix it tickets dont effect your insurance. Only moving violations effect your insurance rate. Having only 1 minor ticket, like speeding, and your still considered a "good driver". Once you have 2 points or more your rate will go up quite a bit. I only have 1 speeding ticket and was gonna go to traffic school, but I was going 27 over the limit, and you can only go to traffic school for speeding > 25.

I think it's hit and miss, really. I had mine off since July 06, and haven't been stopped yet. But I'm in the process of putting it on. I have to return to the dealer Sat because the plate mount is missing a part for the screw.

I'm putting it on as a "preventive" measure, because with my job I can't afford to get stopped on the way to a meeting, lose 20 minutes and arrive late.
