The typical cone of a laser radar gun is 3 feet at the distance of 1000 feet and shoots 1000 samples per second at a speed of 984,000,000 feet per second. The license plate is the most retroreflective part of your car that returns light at a 4 milliradian cone angle at the lowest (depends on your State), but in the front you still have the headlights and in the rear the tail lights.

If the license plate were the only target on the car, the Taylor-Bell license plate cover would reduce the detection range by 84%. Of course if something else were the target, you're screwed.

I have one that not many people have heard of, but i swear by it (and i have used the 8500 and V1). I use the Phantom III. It's a detector/jammer...but it's a legal jammer because it gets through a loophole...it doesn't "jam" the signal...it sends back false signals (read - the cop sees that your going 853 mph). It's in between the v1 and 8500 in price. The only thing is that it has some funny noises that i haven't yet learned what they are...but I I have a pretty good read on it 98% of the time as far as knowing if theres a cop. And yes, i use it all the time.
