I made one from 1 1/2 x 3/4 Ali bar wasn't really bothered about the grade as basically the loads if you look are compression and tension and that size bar is unlikely to distort much at all given the length over which loads would be applied. Did it make a difference I am not sure I could tell to be honest. I doubt there's actually much wrong with the fabricated OEM unit.

interestingly I was at silverstone at the weekend in the garage with 4 Ginetta G50 race cars and noticed a few things of interest. first these cars run a big gay wing , seriously big !, at silverstone they had a very small angle of attack and the trailing edge of the wings had small 10 x 10mm angle bolted on as some sort of diffuser, the wings are also not bolted to a flimsy bonnet lid but directly to the rear space frame chassis. The other interesting item was one car was having its geo checked , with 2 poles and a couple of,bits of string no fancy machines here , they made some adjustments,to,the front end and it was, pronounced as perfect thereafter.

The Cars were quick and came 1,2,3,4 in class in the Britcar Endurance races including 911,s , beating some considerably more, exotic stuff. Boy is the fibreglass body work of the cars tatty, lots of gafffa tape. Indeed the No1 car had its bonnet come adrift in race one , front near side latch fell off , as aresult it would not, pull 5 or 6th gear for the last 10 mins of the first drivers session , still first in class though.

Just musing !

The angle is a gurney flap, standard fare for most racing wings. The string method is as accurate as any other if it's done right, time consuming though.
Race cars are always tatty, most track cars are way better finished than most race cars. Which is why they weigh a lot more too

Strength isn't an issue for a brace - stiffness is - anything you'll make it out of will be strong enough, even a plastic one.
