Look what I got for $5! (Pics)
Actually, my GF got him/her for me for $5. I had to spend the $130 on the tank, rocks, food, turtle wax, etc.
Pretty cool, though. Been watching him all day. He's about the size of a half dollar. Anyone know anything about turtles? How can I tell if it's a boy or girl? It doesn't have a "thingie", but I don't think it works that way for turtles...
I have a red-eared slider too, about the size of my palm. It is 7.5 yrs old. I know it is a female because the tail is shorter proportionally, and the fingernails are short. It is hard to tell when the turtle is young.
BTW, it is illegal to have turtles less than 4" shell length in the US. I have already called the cops and they are gonna arrest you at the next Bay Area Meet.

These small turtles are hard to raise. I hope you got a heat lamp or something, otherwise, it will have a hard time surviving this winter. But once they are about 3-4" long, they just won't die!!! Very easy to take care of.

I didn't really understand why until I read your post!
