I used to have false map turtles, too. Heat lamp or bright light a good idea. Turn it off at night -- It's dark in the real world. Get him/her a buddy turtle. Your terrarium looks good. They like an environment with both dry land and water. Medium coarse aquarium gravel, propped up into a slope with rocks worked best for me. They will eat lettuce, mealworms, crickets, or pet store turtle food. Have fun.

LOL!

Or alternatively, name him VTEC and put one of those "VTEC INSIDE" stickers on the tank.

Well, I just moved to LA, so the weather is much warmer on average than in the Bay Area.

i was under the understanding that only teachers and people with special cases get to purchase these lovely creatures. My ex roommate actually found one at a park, by the creek, and he just stole it. that guy!...

anyway, you might want to provide it with some heat. During the night, i don't know how cold it gets, but you want to maintain at least 65-80 degrees in the tank. maybe a water heater to heat some water, or a rock heater. A heatlamp is the best thing. If you have the tank in the same room as your bed, you might want to switch to one of those red or black lights.. so it is darker but will provide the same heat. a ceramic heat lamp provides heat and no light. try that.

Did it come free with Salmonella? I think that's the main reason why they're not sold in pet stores around here.
And yes, I do believe they have a "thingie" but it ain't just "hangin' out". When turtles do "it", they do "it" "doggie style".

Question: Is this a true turtle or is it a tortoise? Turtles make great soup when they no longer make a good pet. Taste like chicken!
