Cthree, I know you are busy so I thought I would throw this on here and see if someone knows why the quality of my avatar all of a sudden sucks regardless of what photo I use from my album. It was perfect last week and now the resolution is poor and the photo compressed, I should just leave things well enough alone.

I've never had any luck using a photo from my album as an avatar pic. I've found that resizing it myself first and loading it directly from my computer works best for me.

It was working great (see mine <--) and then for some unexplained reason it went to shit. It turns out that re-scaling an image proportionally requires a PhD in theoretical physics because I've written that function at least 4 times and I even paid yogi to write such a function (what we have now) and no matter what it seems to work ok for a while then goes to hell.

Maybe we'll have more success with the new gallery I'm working on. For now if it works great otherwise you'll need to do it by hand using photoshop or something and upload it from MyS2K. The maximum dimensions required for that are 100x100 pixels, 15KB or smaller in GIF, JPEG or PNG format.

Load your desired image into PhotoShop. Choose Image -> Image Size... For Pixel Dimensions enter 100 for the longest side; the other dimension should be set automatically. Click OK. Choose File -> Save for Web... Choose a preset of JPEG High and check the bottom left corner of the window and it should say:

JPEG
3.887K
2 sec @ 28.8 Kbps

or something to that effect. Make sure the size shown is smaller than 15K. Click Save

You can now upload that image as your avatar in MyS2K.

And if you can't afford P-Shop or don't want something so elaborate, there are alternatives. I've had good luck with a screen-capture program called HyperSnap (available from Hyperionics.com). It's not free, but it will scale things nicely, do file conversion, and even has a pixel-by-pixel edit capability. It doesn't however, do animated gifs. HPH
