how do you create custom avatar?

i can't figure out how to reduce any of my photos to a 5k size. is there a program out there that would help be do this?

I used Paint Shop Pro (Jasc software) - you can download an unlimited trial version for free. It gives you a lot of flexibility, including resizing to the limited number of pixels allowed in an avatar.

okay, i got the software, but i see nothing on reducing pixels. i'm not normally this impaired, but could you walk me thru it a little more please?
