Default how do i make a custom avatar?

how do i turn my normal photos into an avatar? i looked in paintshop pro and acrobat and can't find instructions on how to reduce to 100x100 pixels or 5k in size. actually i did manage to reduce one photo to less than 5k but it still exceeded the pixel range.

any assistance would be appreciated.

In Paintshop:

- Open your image file
- Go to the "Image" menu. Select "resize". Select "Pixel Size". Make sure the maximum dimension is 100 pixels.
- Save the image.

If the size of the file is still to large, use JPEG compression:
-Go to the "file" menu. Select "Save as". Select "JPEG" as type. Click "Options". Play with the "compression factor".
- Save the file and check the file size with windows explorer.
