Default Problem with the search

So when I search for something the results come up just fine, but when I try to "sort" by date it comes up with an error page.

For example in the member's classified I searched for seats and it came up with results but when I tried to search by date to find recent threads it came up with an error

yea I did, but idk how to make it a specific search in a forum and how to sort by date... it kind of sorts by recent posts but not exactly (mine went from 16 hours ago - then 3 hours ago - then 14 days ago)

There seems to be a terminology gap in regards to "search".

Search means find something. You say what you are looking for and the software tryies to find it for you. The results are returned in order of most likely matches to your query. If you change the sort order of the results then the whole exercise is pointless because you'll be seeing barely matching results posted yesterday returned ahead of an excellent match posted the day before.

You are assuming that all of the results are equally viable matches to your query, they are not. Among matches of equal rank they are returned by date (more or less). That is why you are seeing the results you are.

That is search.

Including and excluding topics containing specific words, word fragments or characters and sorting them in some specific order isn't fulltext search but rather boolean filtering and that won't be implemented until later this summer.

Search is designed to find topic "like", "about" or "related to" something. It isn't and won't be used to find a specific topic or post from among a broad collection of same based on presence or absence of some spec if attribute.

The current search tool tries to do both and fails because they are actually two entirely different things. That is why search was the single biggest user complaint and why it is being replaced by two completely different features to do two completely different jobs in a way that people can figure out how to use.

I hope that answers your question.

Ok, let me rephrase, the beta search does not allow me to search a specific forum. I only want it to search in the forum "Member S2000 Classified", it does not do that right now. I can understand that it is still a test version so everything is still being worked out. I don't care about this search (atm), I am wondering why the old one is not working properly anymore, it used to work fine for me.

It was fine because I could search for an individual word "seat" in a specific forum "Member S2000 Classified" and then I could sort by date to find current seats for sale. Given that it would also come up with junk threads since it returns any thread with the word "seat" in it that is recent but usually there weren't too many of those results.

I am just wondering why now (it used to not be the case) the search does not let me sort by date, it keeps giving me an error page. The sort by A-Z still works but date doesn't.

Good point here for searching on a specific forum, but the beta search is still a beta version. I'm sure that it will be enhanced in the future.

So far it works fine with me whenever I need to find something.

i have a problem with searching by user.

i do:

user:"Croc"
or
user:Croc
or
user:croc

th eproblem is that i'm only getting results 1 year old threads but not from new threads.

example of a new thread that doesn't come up in search results:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=793390

beta search didn't work with "user:croc" parameter.

The search index is a separate database which in on the old search doesn't reindex automatically or in some cases at all much of the time. I can try to manually reindex and see if that helps.

[edit]

ok, I've reindexed the search database, give it another try.
